CARCEL is a new Copenhagen-based fashion label, manufactured by women in prison. We go where the best and most sustainable materials in the world meet the highest rate of poverty-related crime. This way, we transform lost time into fair wages, skills and hopes of a better future. With this production set up we are able to make a difference while providing our costumers with high quality designs that last.
Designed in Copenhagen
Our designs take their starting point in the Scandinavian design tradition where simple silhouettes meet premium quality materials. Our mission is to create quality design, where attention to detail and silhouette meets the most luxurious materials in the world, while solving a problem rather than creating one. For us, this is the ultimate combination to create good design.
Made by women in prison to break the cycle of poverty
Most women in developing countries are incarcerated due to poverty-related crimes. It is predominantly young, poor, single mothers with a low level of education and income. We visited Peruvian prisons and realized that they are already sewing and knitting, but with no access to a market, they can't sell their products and make no money. We turn this wasted time into skills and paid jobs so women in prison can support themselves, send their children to school, save up for a crime-free beginning and ultimately, break the cycle of poverty.
